Chet Baker - 'Candy' Seldom Disappoints
'Candy' is an outstanding video for Chet Baker and straight-ahead jazz fans. It's always great to hear the tone, phrasing and lyrical approach that define this great musician. I've never been a fan of his vocals, but that's a personal bias. At least for me, Chet's singing is an acquired taste. The interview sessions appear uncomfortable/forced for both interviewer and CB, but I enjoyed the history behind the shared stories. The pianist & bass player accompany Chet well on the tunes - never a doubt that Chet can absolutely bring it. I'm really glad that I had access to this moment in Chet Baker's day.
Focus on the lovely music
I struggle sometimes watching Chet in his later years, seeing his ravaged face, knowing how much he had lost. But watching this film tonight helped me realize how lucky he actually was. His music intact, playing with intensity and lovely tone. The accompanying musicians are fine, particularly the Bill Evans-influenced Michel Graillier. He's perfectly lucid and unself-conscious in the interview, which ends on a particularly poignant note.
I'd encourage anyone to give this one a try.
And thank goodness for the Danes, who recorded so much jazz.
Odd but compelling
As cinema this leaves much to be desired but Baker's facial expressions and odd interaction with interviewer Red Mitchell speak volumes. So does his music. A tormented individual, Baker had an uncanny gift for jazz. But his personality and personal problems often obscured his musical genius. This is for jazz fans only.
